University of Maryland UAS Test Site

The University of Maryland Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Test Site is an operational RDT&E center focused on the integration of new technologies and applications into UAS, and the incorporation of UAS into multi-domain unmanned and autonomous systems. It was started initially in response to the FAA’s identified need for regional UAS research centers capable of supporting integration of UAS into the national airspace and enabling civil and commercial access to the airspace. Since then it has grown into an international presence, not only gaining access for industry and governmental partners, but pushing forward the technologies associated with UAS, and the advanced applications across domains. Significant partners include DOD, NASA, NOAA, USDA, industry from large OEMs to small start-ups, major medical industry leaders, academia across the country, and many of the major research centers across the UMD campus. As well as being a state-wide leader in UAS research, they also fly research internationally, oftentimes in response to natural disasters. The team focuses on the integration and airworthiness aspects of UAS technologies as well as the safe, efficient and legal flight authorizations for new systems in the national airspace.
